England's green and pleasant land welcomes visitors from around the world. The choice of accommodation is yours whether it is Bed and Breakfast, a five star hotel, a caravan or holiday park, what about a canal boat or a cottage in the country. Whichever chosen English county the diversity of England is for you to savour. Bordering Somerset Wiltshire, Hampshire and a small area of Devon is the county Dorset. Its county town of Dorchester lies north of the coastal town of Weymouth where Deep Sea Adventures can be explored or a visit to Portland and Portland Bill Lighthouse and the Portland Museum and Shipwreck Centre will supply endless interested. Dorchester's history include the 'Tolpuddle Martyrs' the agricultural labourers who were tried on the 17th March 1834 for forming a Trade Union and sentence to transportation. The Hangman was kept very busy during the time of Judge Jeffreys of the Bloody Assize 150 years earlier where 300 followers of the Duke of Monmouth were tried and received death sentences. Dorset's most famous son was the writer and poet Thomas Hardy who was born at Higher Brockhampton in 1840. He built himself a house at Max Gate near Dorchester where some of his writings included The Hangman's Cottage in his short story 'The Withered Arm' from the Wessex Tales and 'The Mayor of Casterbridge' is set in the town/. Hardy described Dorchester itself as 'Compact as a box of dominoes'. Thomas Hardy's statue stands at Top o' Town and from here the tree lined West Walks can be explored which follows the old Roman Wall and the Roman Town House in Colliton Park. Dorset is known as Hardy Country and well worth a visit. So book your accommodation at 'A Place To Stay UK' | ||||||||||||||||||
